This blog post was originally an audio recording that can be listened to via the video below. It was recorded, unscripted, in our bathroom while hiding from the kids and recovering from an illness myself. So please pardon the scratchy voice along with the “ums”.
This diatribe was born of the fact that I genuinely want people to prioritize exercise and nutrition at this, or any, time because it is the only answer to unlocking true healthcare and wellness.
Despite our leaders’ decision to, once again, block people from resources for better health – you do have options. Both in your community and at home. Let’s find the best path for you.

You would think that for a business like ours, it would be the perfect time to start capitalizing on headlines like, “Gym Closed? Workout from home!”
The fact is, though, that we’ve been slow to jump on that because we’re grieving for our fellow gym owners. We’ve been there and we completely understand how challenging the last week has been and how tired and run-down they are.
The last thing we want to do is step into the conversation and basically make light of the fact that people can’t go to the gym anymore, so they can workout at home or online.
So this message comes with a caveat, and that is:
We are a small, family-run business. So if you want to support small and support family – we are not affiliated, we don’t work with a large company of which we’re just coaches. We own our business, we do our coaching, we write our programming, we work with our clients 1-on-1. We keep it small on purpose so that we can do that and still maintain a lifestyle where we support our family in every capacity that we want to.
So if you want to workout, at home, and you want to start on a journey toward fitness and you want to support a small business, then get in touch with us.
If you still want to support a small business in your community, specifically, call your local gym. Reach out to them. Find out if they are offering online classes or online programming or what they’re doing to work around this time where they’ve been forced, once again, to shutter their doors and not serve the people in their community in person, in their facility – which is where their passion lies.
So if that is your desire, to get connected inside of your community and support a small business, then please stop reading now and reach out to them and show them that you are willing to support them by joining them now and not waiting until later or until things reopen. That you’re serious enough about your health to get started right at this moment. Because I’m telling you, they will be over the moon. You will be the reason they smile today.
If you have always really wanted to start a fitness journey, and the gym isn’t your thing.
Or maybe you don’t live in a community where you have a gym close by. That’s certainly true of our family and it’s part of the reason we’re so passionate about at-home fitness.
If we drove to a gym to work out multiple times a week, that would be a minimum of an extra hour of travel time in the car for our family. On top of the fact that we don’t have family closeby for childcare so we couldn’t go at the same time, because who would provide that childcare. So really that’s two hours in the car for one person to go to the gym one time and another person to go to the gym another time. That’s madness.
We serve a variety of clients where, for some of them, it’s not convenient to attend fitness sessions or gym classes in person, live, and some of them just don’t want to. The gym is not their happy place. It is a place where they feel self-conscious or a place where they feel demotivated or a place where there are 1001 distractions to what they actually want to accomplish. They want to reach their health and fitness goals with no distractions or with fewer distractions.
So we work with those people on having fitness programs that are really for them and really fit into their lifestyle, and they do them from home. Maybe in a living room, maybe in a garage, or in the summer from their deck – or a variety of places like the local track or football field.
We are passionate about giving people a real and viable option for coaching in that atmosphere.
Yes, this situation in the world, with this virus, is what spurred us to that, but we’ve developed a real passion for it over the last 18 months. That has been the sole aim of Shores Fitness and Nutrition.
What we’ve always known and what we’ve always understood from health, science, and data is that your life is better and you are less susceptible to health risks when you have good cardiovascular health, when you have strong joints and muscles, and when you are not suffering from the effects of metabolic syndromes – like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes.
We don’t want to work with people because they’re driven by fear of any of those diseases or a virus.
We want to work with people because they legitimately have come to an understanding that their life will be better, that they’ll be capable of more things, that their body will be more resilient, that they’ll be able to engage in more of life because they are healthier.
Because their body is capable of doing things that they enjoy – doing them for longer, doing them without regretting it the next day. Another big thing that we’re really passionate about is the ability to live pain-free, or in very minimal discomfort, from old injuries or from aging.
The natural breakdown in the body as we age is real. That’s a real thing. But it doesn’t have to be a given to, “This is what life is now. It’ll never get better. I’m achy, I’m in pain. I can’t get down and get back up. If I’m too active I can barely get out of bed the next day.”
That’s not life and that’s not aging. It certainly doesn’t have to be.
A big passion of ours is helping people build strength after 35, 40, 45, 50, even 60, and beyond. We work with multiple clients in that age group.
We want life to be fulfilling and enriched through all of its seasons and all of its stages & believe that developing a consistent habit of exercise and intentional movement does that.
It doesn’t need to be done with fancy equipment, and it doesn’t need to be done in a particular building. It can be done in all different modes, in all different places, with all different types of equipment.
But the important thing is that the plan you’re following is built for your life. That it’s built for your time commitment, your home and the space you have to work with, and the equipment you have. You don’t have to go spend thousands of dollars on fancy stuff and then watch it become a coat rack.
We believe that you need to have flexibility so that when you go on holiday or life has busy seasons, you don’t experience shame and guilt that lead you to discontinue all these changes you’ve worked so hard to make. Then, you end up feeling like you’re starting from the ground up over and over and over again.
That’s what gets us really excited.
Helping people build health and fitness habits into their life in such a way that [those habits] are antifragile.
No matter what’s going on in the greater world, or in their particular world, though it might impact their day – some days they might have an hour and some days they might have only 20 minutes – and that’s okay. But that very little, if nothing, puts their pursuit of health to a dead stop.
So that everything is as consistent and enjoyable and encouraging as we can help them to make it to be. If that’s what you’re looking for, there’s nothing wrong with New Year’s resolutions, but there’s also nothing wrong with starting in July.
You have to start when you’re ready – when you’re good and ready. When you’re prepared to commit. Because starting and stopping isn’t good for anybody – not mentally, not emotionally, not physically. When you’re really ready to dive in.
So if that’s the time for you, and your feeling like, “Thanks, Doug. I was ready. I was ready to go and now the gyms are closed again, and I know I don’t have this opportunity to talk to someone or to make a plan or to get on the right track.”
You do. You do have an opportunity and Shores Fitness and Nutrition is that opportunity.
We are here to talk to you and we are here to encourage you. To help you make a plan, and then to hold you accountable to that plan, and to provide the knowledge and tools you need to stick to it day-to-day and week-to-week.
Whether it’s 6 weeks or like clients who we’ve had with us, for now, more than two years. If that is for you – awesome. But if you just need 6 solid weeks of work and help to get on the right track, then let’s do that.
You don’t have to commit forever to commit for now, and that’s okay.
